I’m Workin’ 9-5. Then 7-8:30, then 10-6, then– Why Is My Favorite Chinese Place Closed??

I’m not really sure what’s going on with my life, except for the fact that I went from having no job to having what feels like 3 in about 4.7 seconds.

There was no transition period.

And I’m pretty sure that everyone needs a transition period.

I’m assisting in a wedding photography shoot on Saturday.  I have no idea what I’m doing.  I feel like I’m constantly playing catch-up in my one freelance writing gig.  My dogs are vibrating balls of energy because I haven’t figured out how to fit walking them into our new schedule.  Dinners are becoming slightly more “convenient,” and the Chinese take-out place down the street might start recognizing us once again.

Also, things are hectic in the land of real estate assistantship.  Assistantry?  Asskickingshiptry?  Apparently I’m doing something right, because after exactly a week-and-a-half of part-timing it, they want me to help out full-time.  And I’m torn.  On the obvious hand, it would be great to have the extra money.  On the other hand, it will take away serious time from my writing pursuits, including my little land of Domestiphobia.  Which is obviously already suffering.

I think I will take it on for a little while, mainly to help the team out of the current bind that’s caused when a group already manages over 50 properties, then takes on 40 more it knows nothing about all at one time.

On the plus-side, I’m learning a lot about the land of juggling showings, repair companies, and the egos of finicky clients.  I’ve pulled my travel coffee cup from the back of the cupboard, dusted off the mothballs, and can once again enjoy the de-stressing qualities of an aromatic cup of Kona on a 30-minute morning commute.  I feel a little bit important and needed.  The world is getting interesting again, and that’s never a bad thing.

On the negative side, well.

Let’s not worry about that unless we come to it, shall we?

Katie

Congrats on the full time offer! You must be working your tail off for them to offer so quickly.

My tail and probably other body parts as well. My visor fell off the Tracker yesterday, which doesn’t bode well for the mileage I’m putting on her. Maybe my boss will like me enough to give me a work vehicle! :)

Nice post, Katie. Congrats on the full-time offer, although personally, I’d give anything to go back part-time haha. That being said, the extra money that full-time offers is certainly nice to use for travel :) I bet you’re going to love the wedding photography shoot. I think anything having to do with photography would be an awesome job.

Who do you freelance for if you don’t mind my asking?

I think it prudent to get paid even if it’s not what you really want to do. Look at the writers who held down 90 hour work weeks who now have best sellers on the New York Times….Gabrielle Hamilton, Bourdain….it can and must be done. You might have more to write about. Congrats.

Thanks, Matty! And you’re absolutely right — I just need to adopt a better work ethic and rearrange my priorities. If I really want to get it done, it will get done — regardless of whether or not I have a “real” job.

Wow sounds like things are crazy busy right now. Unsolicited advice/thoughts? I say continue until it doesn’t make you happy. If you feel intellectually stimulated and are enjoying this new environment, then continue to do it. You’ll just have to cut other things. For me, I work a full time job (it’s a little more than full time usually with workload), so that means I can only do a little free lance work, but then the rest of my free time goes to the blog. That means I can only do one post a week instead of two or three that I used to. Life goes on. My job is interesting, I feel like I can write with one small freelance project and one blog post a week, and I’m lucky to have a few extra dollars to go out to drinks with friends. As long as you are comfortable, and happy, I say don’t beat yourself up – you can’t do everything. But maybe you can do a little of everything.

A little of everything… I like that. :) I’m definitely learning with my job, but I can tell it probably won’t be long until it becomes less intellectually stimulating and more of a pain in the ass. Oh well, I’ll adjust — just like I always do.

i swear, we’re so alike.

poor you.

first, i hate “real” jobs. and by real, i mean anything that isn’t creative. However, i too realize that once in a while I have bills to pay and writing personal blogs doesn’t always seem to take care of that.

eer, it never does.

I know what you mean though, it’s like, as soon as you commit to something that’s this time consuming then you know you’re creative pursuits will suffer, yet you can’t justify JUST doing creative things unless you’re making money from it. But how do you ever make money from it IF YOU CANT SPEND TIME ON IT!!! ahh!

Oh, and i have a lot of people asking me to do weddings. I have never done one and have no clue what i’m doing either. I agreed to do one next may…. hopefully i can get my act together by then. I don’t even know how to use a flash for goodness sakes.

Whoah. It’s like you’re inside my head. I swear I’ve spoken that 5th paragraph — probably verbatim — countless times lately. It’s so frustrating… And I felt like I was finally starting to make a little progress in the way of making money doing what I actually like, but then my grace period ran out of not earning “enough,” and now I’m afraid I’m going to get sucked back into my old ways. I guess I just have to MAKE the time. That’s what people do, right? They just conjure time. I’m sure I can figure that out. ;)

Just popped over to your blog after you left a comment on my Lemon and Olive Chicken recipe on TastyKitchen, and I like it! Looking forward to reading more, and hope the three jobs go well!

Thank you for stopping by! Hopefully I will be trying that recipe soon, since I am a huge fan of olives — both black and green. Thanks for sharing it!
